Iona WLAX Falls Short On The Road At FDU

TEANECK, N.J. — The Iona University women's lacrosse team came up just short Saturday afternoon, falling 10-9 to Fairleigh Dickinson in a tightly contested matchup.

The loss drops the Gaels to a narrow defeat despite a late fourth-quarter push that nearly erased a three-goal deficit. FDU held on in the closing seconds in front of 214 fans.

Iona was led offensively by Brie Gaccino, who scored three goals for her first career hat trick. Calen Norton and Brianna Reynolds each added two goals, while Bella Duffy contributed a goal and an assist. Haley Lauer chipped in with one assist.

Defensively, Finley Mulhern recorded a team-high three ground balls. Goalkeeper Lauren Sweeney played all 60 minutes in net and made eight saves.

Fairleigh Dickinson took control early, grabbing a 2-1 lead in the opening quarter. The Knights extended their advantage in the second, outscoring Iona 4-3 to carry a 6-4 lead into halftime.
The teams traded goals in the third quarter. Iona capitalized on a late woman-up opportunity, as Sydney Grassi and Norton scored consecutive goals to cut the deficit to 8-7 entering the final period.

The Knights pushed their lead to 10-7 midway through the fourth quarter before the Gaels mounted one final surge. Duffy found the back of the net with 3:59 remaining, and Gaccino added her third and final goal just over a minute later to trim the margin to one.

Iona had a final opportunity in the closing seconds, but a turnover prevented the equalizer as Fairleigh Dickinson secured the 10-9 victory.
