Iona Softball Tops Stony Brook, 9-2 in Midweek Matchup

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University Softball team earned its second straight win at Donald E. Walsh Field with a 9-2 victory over metropolitan foe Stony Brook. The Gaels broke the tie ball game with a big final two innings to earn their first win over the Seawolves since 2014.

The Maroon & Gold offense strung together 11 hits in the victory. Senior Alivia Lichtner registered a team-high three hits and three runs batted in. Seniors Hailey Guerrero and Brianna Fischer both recorded two hits and two runs scored. Senior Brooke Acker tallied her 100th career hit and rookie LeeAnn Downey drove in two runs. Freshman Melissa Gordon tallied her first collegiate win with the complete game effort in the circle.

GAME SUMMARY

Stony Brook struck first in the top of the first on a two-out RBI single to jump out in front 1-0. Iona was quick to counter in the next half inning as Fischer lined the 2-2 offering over the left field wall for her second home run of the season.

The Seawolves loomed with runners in scoring position in both the second and fourth inning but Gordon escaped trouble both times with an inning ending lineout in the second and a groundout in the fourth.

Iona struck again in the bottom of the fourth as Acker worked a leadoff walk. Sophomore Zoey Nussbaum came in as a pinch runner and advanced to second on a groundout. Rookie McKenzie Marranca drove her in on an RBI single up the middle on a full count to go up 2-1.

It was short lived as Stony Brook answered in the top of the fifth on a two-out RBI single to right field to knot the game up at 2-2.

The Gaels responded in the next half inning as Guerrero lined a sharp single back to the pitcher before swiping second base on a steal. Acker then lined her 100th hit to the gap in right center for the RBI double. The inning continued as Lichtner won the six-pitch at bat with an RBI single to right field for the 4-2 advantage.

Gordon then worked a one, two, three top half of the sixth against the Seawolves lineup. Iona then poured on five runs on four hits as Downey recorded a two-RBI single to right field, a score on a throwing error followed before Lichtner lined a two-run double down the left field line to bring the score to 9-2.

Stony Brook was unable to put together a last chance rally in the seventh after a one-out walk as Gordon got an infield pop out before scooping the game ending ground out for her first collegiate victory. She scattered six hits and four walks while striking out two in the complete game effort.
