Iona Baseball Closes Series vs. Merrimack with a 15-11 Win

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University baseball team closed its series against Merrimack on Sunday with a 15-11 victory. The game was highlighted by a strong offensive performance in the first four innings. Over the final five innings, both bullpens settled in and combined to allow just two runs.

Game summary

Sophomore Justin Trinidad retired the side to open the game for the Maroon & Gold. Trinidad received early run support in the first inning as the offense put up five runs. The inning was highlighted by two bases loaded walks and a two RBI single from senior Nickolas Mora that scored the first four runs. The fifth run came on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the second, junior AJ Oden started a rally for the Gaels with a single and was later driven in on a single from redshirt-freshman Cole Silvia to extend the Gaels lead to six. After another run scored in the following at bat, Mora drove in another runner with a single up the middle to give the Gaels an eight run lead. In the next at bat, freshman Aiden Ciprian brought in another run with a single through the left side, pushing the lead to nine heading into the third inning.

The Warriors did not go down quietly as they scored nine runs in the third inning, with eight of those runs coming with two outs. The inning included two home runs, three doubles, and two singles. Junior Kyle Hard entered in relief and recorded the final out of the inning.

The Maroon & Gold went down quietly in the third but responded in the fourth. Silvia led off the inning with a walk, followed by a hit by pitch. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Mora lifted a fly ball to center field that allowed the Gaels to retake the lead. After another walk and a hit by pitch loaded the bases, senior Damian Rodriguez drew a four pitch walk to give the Gaels an 11-9 lead.

Sophomore Malachi Costello followed with a walk in the next at bat to drive in another run and give the Gaels their third run of the inning, making the score 12-9. In the next at bat, Oden singled to center field to drive in two more runs and give the Gaels a five run lead. Jordan Overton then singled through the left side to bring in another run and extend the lead to 15-9.

The Warriors added one run in both the seventh and eighth innings, but it was not enough to overcome the fourth inning rally as the Gaels secured a 15-11 victory.
