NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University baseball team fell behind 2-0 in the first inning, but the Gaels answered with a six run second to take a 6-2 lead. The Bulldogs steadily chipped away at the deficit over the remainder of the game. The tying run came across in the ninth inning, forcing extra innings. In the tenth, Yale used a sacrifice bunt to bring home the go ahead run, as the Gaels fell 7-6.
Game summary
The Gaels found themselves in early trouble to start the game as the Bulldogs opened with a single up the middle. The runner advanced to second on a balk and was driven in during the next at bat on a triple to center field, giving Yale an early 1-0 lead. In the following at bat, a single up the middle brought home another run. A double play and a ground out helped the Gaels escape further damage.
The Gaels responded in the bottom of the second. Redshirt freshman Cole Silvia singled to right with one out, and junior JC Frias was hit by a pitch in the next at bat to move Silvia to second. Graduate student Jacob Veczko was also hit by a pitch to load the bases. Freshman Aiden Ciprian followed with a single through the left side to tie the game at two.
Senior Damian Rodriguez then singled through the right side to bring in another run and give the Gaels the lead. Redshirt sophomore Sean Stephenson kept the rally going with a single to right center, extending the lead to 4-2. Redshirt junior Jordan Overton followed with a double to right center that drove in another run, making it 5-2. The surge forced the Bulldogs' starter out of the game early. The Gaels continued to apply pressure as sophomore Malachi Costello singled to left field to drive in another run, capping a six run second inning.
Yale answered in the top of the third with a single up the middle to cut the deficit to 6-3. The Maroon and Gold bullpen held the Bulldogs in check until the sixth inning, when an RBI single to center trimmed the lead to 6-4. The Gaels offense cooled after the big second inning, allowing Yale to inch closer. A sacrifice bunt in the seventh brought home another run, making it a one run game with two innings to play.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Gaels put together another rally. Stephenson singled with one out, and sophomore Kiernan Kehoe followed with a single of his own to put runners on first and second. Costello then reached on a single to third to load the bases, but the next two batters were retired, leaving all three runners stranded.
In the top of the ninth, Yale led off with a single through the left side. The runner moved up two bases on consecutive wild pitches. With one out and a runner on third, the Bulldogs drew a walk to put runners on the corners. The next batter was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Yale then grounded out to tie the game at six.
The game moved into extra innings, where a sacrifice bunt allowed Yale to take its first lead since the second inning. The Gaels went down in order in the bottom of the tenth, falling 7-6.
