Iona MLAX Wins Thriller vs. Mount St. Mary’s on Turissini Gamewinner in Final Seconds

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Freshman Carson Turissini found the back of the net with 7.3 seconds remaining to lift the Iona University men's lacrosse team to a thrilling 15-14 win over Mount St. Mary's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Mazzella Field. In a back-and-forth contest that featured five ties and three lead changes, the home side delivered the final strike. Turissini led a record-setting offensive effort with nine points on three goals and six assists. Sophomore Cullen Lawry matched his own program record with five goals and added a new benchmark with five caused turnovers, while sophomore Kyle Hardie contributed a hat trick in the victory.

THE RUNDOWN

Mount St. Mary's came out firing, scoring the first three goals, including a pair just six seconds apart in the opening minute. Iona answered to cut the deficit to one at 3-2 behind tallies from Hardie and sophomore Vincent Pititto midway through the first. The visitors responded with another three-goal surge in under two minutes to build a 6-2 lead late in the quarter. Lawry stopped the run with his first goal just seven seconds after a faceoff win by Cole Gibstein, trimming the margin heading into the break.

Freshman Lleyton Hall brought the score to 6-4 early in the second quarter with a highlight-reel finish at 12:23. After a prolonged scoreless stretch, Mount regained a three-goal edge before Iona closed the half on a 3-0 run. Lawry scored twice around a Hardie strike as the teams entered halftime tied 7-7.

The Gaels took their first lead less than a minute into the third quarter on Hardie's third goal of the game. Mount St. Mary's responded by scoring five of the next seven goals to carry a 12-10 advantage into the fourth. Lawry accounted for both tallies during that stretch, keeping the deficit within reach.

Sophomore Jake Riglietti ended a lengthy scoring drought with a goal to make it 12-11, but the Mountaineers answered with two straight to push the lead back to three with just over 11 minutes to play. Iona mounted its comeback midway through the final frame as Turissini connected with sophomore captain Jimmy Kennedy on back-to-back goals to pull within one. Hall evened the score with under four minutes remaining, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

After forcing a turnover with 2:30 left, the Gaels controlled possession and worked through multiple chances. On the sixth shot of the sequence, Turissini delivered the go-ahead goal as the shot clock ran under four seconds. Mount St. Mary's won the ensuing faceoff and generated a final opportunity, but sophomore goalkeeper Noah Perea made the save to secure the 15-14 win.
