Iona Baseball Falls 18-13 in Midweek Matchup vs. La Salle

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Iona University baseball team faced off against La Salle in a midweek match up. In a high scoring contest, the Explorers plated at least three runs in four of the first five innings. The Gaels did most of their damage in the later innings, but it was not enough as they fell 18-13.

GAME SUMMARY

The game turned into a high-scoring affair right from the start. In the top of the first, junior AJ Oden lifted a sacrifice fly to score redshirt sophomore Sean Stephenson from third. La Salle answered in the bottom half as a single to center tied the game at one. An RBI single then gave the Explorers the lead, and in the following at bat, a three run home run to left extended their advantage to 5-1.

The Gaels responded to the big first inning in the top of the second. A fielding error and a hit by pitch put runners on first and second with one out. Senior Damian Rodriguez doubled to left to drive in a run. In the next at bat, Stephenson singled to right to bring in another. Sophomore Malachi Costello followed by driving in one more run to cut the deficit to 5-4.

In the bottom of the second, the Explorers rallied again as a three run home run pushed their lead back to four. La Salle continued to build its advantage, and after a wild pitch brought home a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 9-4, the Explorers added four more runs in the inning. A triple, a single, and a passed ball helped extend the lead to nine.

La Salle's offense stayed hot in the bottom of the fifth with another four run inning, highlighted by two RBI walks, a fielder's choice, and an RBI single. The Maroon & Gold opened the top of the sixth with two walks, and a La Salle fielding error allowed a run to score. Stephenson and Costello each drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and a single to chip away at the deficit. Later in the inning, senior Nickolas Mora doubled to drive in two more runs and bring the lead back to single digits.

In the bottom of the inning, La Salle added another run on a double to right to push the lead back to nine. After two walks in the top of the seventh, Costello homered to right to bring the Gaels within six with two innings remaining. In the eighth, Mora was hit by a pitch and later scored on a double to right by Aiden Ciprian, trimming the lead to five. The Gaels could not get any closer, falling to the Explorers 18-13.
