Iona Baseball Drops Midweek Matchup vs. LIU

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University baseball team fell to LIU, 10-4, in its midweek match up. The Maroon and Gold struck first in the opening inning with a two-run home run, but the Sharks quickly responded to even the score. LIU took control in the bottom of the second, erupting for seven runs to build a 9-2 lead. From there, both offenses cooled off, with Iona adding two more runs and the Sharks tacking on one. The early surge from LIU proved to be the difference, as the Gaels were unable to recover in the 10-4 loss.

GAME SUMMARY

The Gaels got on the board in the top of the first when redshirt-sophomore Sean Stephenson singled, setting up a two-run home run from sophomore Malachi Costello to give Iona an early 2-0 lead. The Sharks responded in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to tie the game at two.

The Sharks offense broke out in the second inning, scoring seven runs on six hits. Two runs came on a single, three scored on a three-RBI triple, and additional runs came from an RBI single and a double, giving LIU a 9-2 lead.

LIU added another run in the bottom of the third on a home run to extend the lead to 10-2. In the top of the fourth, sophomore Kieran Kehoe led off with a double to left field, and redshirt-freshman Tyler Acevedo drove him in to cut the deficit to 10-3. The Maroon and Gold pitching staff settled in during the fourth and fifth innings, allowing just one runner to reach base.

In the sixth, Iona threatened when Acevedo doubled with a runner on first, but the runner was thrown out at home to end the inning. The Gaels put together another opportunity in the seventh as graduate student Chacis Conceicao and senior Damian Rodriguez both singled to put runners on first and second with one out. Stephenson was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, but a double play ended the inning and left the runners stranded.

With the pitching continuing to hold steady, the Gaels added one more run in the eighth as Acevedo recorded an RBI single to make it 10-4. The second inning proved to be the difference, as Iona fell 10-4 in its midweek match up.
