Iona Baseball Drops Game 1 Against Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, CT — The Iona University baseball team fell 21-6 in game one of a three game series against the Fairfield Stags. Fairfield's victory was fueled by an 18 run outburst across the fifth and sixth innings.

GAME SUMMARY

Fairfield's offense struck first as the Stags hit back to back home runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. Graduate student Andrelys Payamps settled in during the second inning and retired the Stags in order.

With one out in the top of the third, senior Braize Mitchell homered to left to cut the deficit in half heading into the bottom of the frame. Fairfield responded in the bottom of the third with an RBI single that pushed the lead back to two.

Both teams were quiet in the fourth, but the Stags broke things open in the fifth. Fairfield scored five runs on just two hits in the inning, using an RBI walk, a sacrifice fly, and a three run home run to build a seven run cushion heading into the sixth.

In the top of the sixth, junior AJ Oden would double to center to drive in Steptenson to cut the Stags lead to six. in The Stags continued to surge in the sixth, erupting for 13 runs on five hits to extend the lead to 19. The inning included two RBI singles, two RBI walks, a two run double, and multiple errors that allowed additional runs to score.

The Gaels showed some fight in the top of the seventh, plating four runs on RBI singles from redshirt sophomore Sean Stephenson, Malachi Costello, Oden, and senior Anthony Zollo to make the score 21-6.

Both teams remained scoreless the rest of the way as Fairfield secured a 21-6 win in game one of the series.
