NEW HAVEN, CT — The Iona University baseball team fell to the Yale Bulldogs 12-1 in its final midweek match up of the season. The Bulldogs took control early, scoring seven runs over the first two innings. The Gaels were unable to find an answer against Yale's pitching staff, recording only four hits in the loss.
GAME SUMMARY
After going down in order in the first inning, the Gaels found themselves in an early 1-0 hole as a walk and two stolen bases put a runner on third with one out. The runner later scored on a bunt single. The Bulldogs continued to add on in their next trip to the plate.
In the second inning, Yale crossed five runs to take an early 7-0 lead. The runs came via RBI singles, a bases-loaded balk, a two-RBI single, and a two-RBI double. The Gaels' offense struggled through the first three innings, tallying only one hit, which came in the second inning on a single from senior Nickolas Mora.
In the top of the fourth, the Gaels had runners on first and second with one out after sophomore Kieran Kehoe and redshirt-freshman Cole Silvia each singled. However, a double play cut the rally short as the game headed to the bottom of the frame. Yale added two more runs in the inning on a two-RBI double and an RBI single to extend its lead to 10-0 heading into the fifth.
The bottom of the fifth saw the Bulldogs continue to expand their lead as an RBI triple and a sacrifice fly pushed the advantage to 12-0. The Maroon & Gold answered with their first run of the game in the top of the sixth.
Mora and Kehoe both reached base on errors to put runners on first and second with one out. Sophomore Malachi Costello then singled to left field to load the bases. With Silvia at the plate, he worked a walk to bring home the Gaels' first run of the game.
The score remained 12-1 through the bottom of the sixth and top of the seventh, forcing the 10-run rule into effect.
