Iona MSOC Falls in Road Matchup at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, NY - The Iona University men's soccer team closed out its season-opening three-game road swing with a 4-0 setback against Syracuse in non-conference action Monday night at SU Soccer Stadium. Sophomore goalkeeper Josh Bells recorded a career-high nine saves for the Gaels, who moved to 1-1-1 on the season.

THE RUNDOWN

Syracuse struck early, opening the scoring in the second minute before adding another goal in the 11th minute to take a 2-0 advantage.

The Maroon & Gold generated its lone shot of the opening half in the 24th minute when sophomore Ricardo Vivo Calderon put an attempt on frame, but the Syracuse goalkeeper made the stop. Iona kept the Orange off the board for the remainder of the opening half and went into the break trailing by two.

The Gaels generated four shots after halftime. Freshman Ignacio Manzanares recorded a pair of attempts, while freshman Manuel Gentile and Vivo Calderon added one apiece. Syracuse extended its lead with goals in the 62nd and 82nd minutes to close out the scoring.

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Bells set a new career high with nine saves, making four stops in the first half and five more after the break.
