Bethany Schlegel was named Assistant Athletics Director for Academic Services in July 2015. Schlegel came to New Rochelle after serving in a similar position at Finger Lakes Community College.
In her two years at Finger Lakes, Schlegel’s responsibilities included overseeing aspects of the entire athletic program, including its direction, student-athlete eligibility, scheduling, and event management. She also served as assistant coach for the volleyball program.
Prior to Finger Lakes, Schlegel spent the 2012-13 academic year at SUNY Brockport with several distinct responsibilities. She was interim head women’s volleyball coach for the Golden Eagles and helped three student-athletes garner SUNY Athletic Conference recognition.
Schlegel also served as an adjunct professor in the Kinesiology, Sport Studies, and Physical Education department at Brockport, lecturing sport management classes. She was also an academic advisement coordinator, helping sport management majors and coaching minors with their class schedules.
Schlegel was an assistant coach for the Golden Eagles for three years prior to being named the interim head volleyball coach.
A volleyball standout and three-year team captain for Brockport, Schlegel helped lead her team to an 84-64 record over her four seasons. In addition, she played in over 500 games for the Golden Eagles and ranks second all-time in digs with 1,774, including a single-season record 681 during the 2007 season. Schlegel was named First-Team All-State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) during her senior season.
Schlegel’s involvement with volleyball continued after graduation. For the past eight years, she worked with Rochester-based Volley FX Volleyball Club. She mentored students of all different age groups, ranging from 12 to 17 years old, and was responsible for managing assistant coaches and parent volunteers. In addition, she used her leadership skills to coordinate the program, and report results to the club director.
Schlegel gained administrative experience through an internship at the University of Rochester in the spring of 2012, in addition to her coaching experience. Here, she authored an event management handbook and assisted in the purchasing of equipment. In addition, she participated in the leadership training of student employees, and supervised the day-to-day operations of the Fitness Center.
A Lancaster, NY native, Schlegel holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education, health science, and teacher certification and a master’s degree in education and athletic administration from The College at Brockport
