Iona College men's basketball coach Tim Cluess announced the addition of John Weir to the Gaels' coaching staff. Weir will serve as video coordinator during the upcoming season.
Weir's most recent experience came as assistant coach at his alma mater of Division III program Rhode Island College. During the 2009-10 season, Weir was an assistant for a program that finished 22-8 and captured both the regular season and conference tournament championship for the second time in school history. Weir's Rhode Island College squad advanced to the NCAA tournament for fourth consecutive year, reaching the Sweet Sixteen. Weir's responsibles included coordinating staff recruiting efforts as well as all administrative duties including film exchange, academic monitoring and team travel. He worked closely with players during practice to develop individual offensive and defensive skills as well as team defensive principles and oversaw all junior and senior recruiting to upgrade talent level in program as well as hosting prospective student-athletes on campus visits.
During the 2008-09 season, Weir was the top assistant at Division III Connecticut College. That season the Camels finished 13-12. Among his duties at Connecticut College, Weir organized film exchange, team travel and monitoring the academic progress of the student-athletes. In addition, he prepared game plans for each opponent and was responsible for the majority of opponents scouting.
After graduating from Rhode Island in 2007, Weir had his first go around as a member of the Anchormen coaching staff. That season, the program finished 23-7 while capturing the conference tournament championship and reaching the second Round of the NCAA tournament. Weir was integral in the recruiting of potential student-athletes, preparing game plans and working with post players during practice.
Weir was a four year member of the squad at Rhode Island College, where he played in 111 games, second most all-time, and finished with an overall record of 77-36 over his four seasons. During his senior season, the team set a school record with 27 wins, winning the program's first outright conference championship and reaching the Elite * in the NCAA Tournament
Weir graduated with a bachelor's of arts in history, and currently resides in Brooklyn, NY.
