Iona University Director of Athletics Matthew Glovaski announced the appointment of Richard Irving as the department's Associate AD for Sports Performance on August 1, 2023. Irving will oversee the strength and conditioning program for all of the Gaels' 23 NCAA Division I athletic teams. He will ensure safe and effective workouts, including program design, injury prevention, nutrition, and supervision of workouts. Irving comes to New Rochelle, NY after spending the last six years at the University at Albany.
"Rich will be an invaluable addition to our team," said Glovaski. "With his extensive experience in strength and conditioning, we are confident that he will lead our athletic programs to their peak performance. We are excited to welcome him to New Rochelle and witness the positive impact he will make on our Gaels' athletic journey."
In September 2017, Irving became an Assistant Strength and Conditioning coach at the University at Albany. His main focus was on the men's basketball, track and field, and men's golf strength programs, with additional contributions to the Great Danes' football program. Irving designed, scheduled, and supervised the training programs for his primary sports, tailoring them to each basketball player through movement analysis screening. He collaborated with the campus nutritionist, managed the strength and conditioning intern program, and oversaw the department's social media presence.
Prior to Albany, Irving spent summer 2017 as a strength and conditioning intern at Mississippi State University and the spring of that year as an intern at intern at Notre Dame. He completed a graduate assistantship at East Stroudsburg (Pa.) North High School. Irving's prior experience includes an internship with Lehigh University and Speed Advantage Training, and in 2016 he was the head strength and conditioning coach and assistant football coach at Pleasant Valley High School.
Irving holds both bachelor's and master's degrees in Exercise Science from East Stroudsburg University where he played four seasons on the Warriors' football team.
