Johnson joined the Iona College men's soccer coaching staff for the 2019 season as an assistant coach and the goalkeeper's coach. Johnson officially became the assistant coach prior to the 2020-21 season. The Manhattan native came to Iona from LIU Brooklyn, spending time on staff since 2016 and helping the program to a 2018 NEC title. Prior to his time with LIU Brooklyn, Johnson spent three years at John Jay, two as the head coach.
Johnson coached the Bloodhounds to a number of program highlights. He guided the team to its first playoff win in over a decade in 2015, led by the program’s first-ever Conference Player of the Year. While at John Jay, the Bloodhounds recorded 13 wins in Johnson’s two seasons at the helm, the most for the program in 10 years.
Johnson played soccer at the collegiate level for the University of Albany, SUNY Cobleskill and Ithaca College. He also has international playing experience in Brazil, Holland, Croatia and England.
Johnson graduated from Ithaca College with a bachelor's degree in psychology. He then attended Brunel University in Middlesex, England and graduated with a master's degree in Sport and Exercise Psychology in 2014.
While in England, Johnson won a National British University Championship title in futsal and qualified for the European Championships and finished 19th in Europe. He also played semi-pro with Hanwell Town FC.
Johnson holds a National Soccer Coaches Association of America Advanced National Goalkeeping diploma, a United States Soccer Federation “C” coaching license, and a NSCAA Level 1 Futsal diploma.
