Iona College Swimming & Diving Head Coach Nick Cavataro and Vice President of Athletics Administration Rick Cole Jr. announced the appointment of Daniel Koenig as the new Assistant Head Coach for the men's and women's swimming & diving programs during the summer of 2017.
In his first season at Iona, the men's swimming & diving placed fifth at the MAAC Championship. Five members of the program participated in the CSCAA National Invitational. It was the first postseason meet for the Maroon & Gold since 2013. The women's team placed third at the MAAC Championship, which was its highest finish since 1992.
Koenig comes to Iona after being an assistant coach at Vassar College. He worked with and elevated both the men's and women's programs. Vassar reached a program high third place finish in the Liberty League and set 26 school records during Koenig's time with the Brewers. While at Vassar Koenig was the pool coordinator where managing lifeguard staff, pool times, and facility requirements.
Vassar excelled in the classroom under Koenig's guidance with the programs' combined 20 Liberty League All-Academic selections and 19 UNYSCSA All-Academic honorees following the 2014-15 season.
Prior to Vassar he served one year as an Assistant Coach at the University of North Dakota after being a graduate assistant at his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin.
At Wisconsin, Koenig was a four-year letter winner and served as a team captain in his senior 2010 season. As a student-athlete he participated at the 2008 Olympic Trials, 2009 US Open and 2009 World Championship Trials in the breaststroke events.
