Rob Fortner (Mahopac, NY) earned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors, it was announced today. Fortner is the second Gael this season to be named the MAAC's top performer.
The left-handed-hitting rightfielder enjoyed an outstanding week at the plate, collecting 13 hits in 18 at-bats (.722) as the Gaels went 4-1 to move into fourth place in the league standings. He also scored eight runs and drove in 11 more as Iona outscored its opponents 48-23.
Fortner led the Gaels to a three-game series sweep of MAAC rival Fairfield over the weekend as he tagged Stags pitching for 10 hits in 13 at-bats (.769). He raised his batting average nearly 40 points to a team-leading .370. He is also tops on the squad with 54 hits and 38 RBIs.
Fortner joined Gaels first baseman Mike Perrone (Paramus, NJ), who won the weekly award on April 2 of this year.
The Gaels are currently on a four-game winning streak heading into the final week of the regular season and a three-game showdown at home against Marist College starting Thursday.
