New Rochelle, NY - Mykeema Ford's 27 points and eight rebounds helped Stony Brook to a 76-55 win over Iona on Tuesday night. The Gaels (2-4) have now lost three in a row.
Tiara Headen paced the Maroon & Gold with 16 points and eight boards. Toni Horvath handed out nine assists.
Kelly Watson added 16 for the Seawolves (2-2).
After trailing early, Iona took its only lead of the contest at the 9:32 mark of the first half on a Lauren Huber basket that made it 19-18. But a 23-9 Stony Brook run to close the opening half put the Gaels behind 41-28 at the break.
Consecutive scores by Jessica Anger and Regan Pettijohn to start the second half brought Iona back to within 41-32. The Seawolves quickly regrouped to steadily pull away, leading by as many as 23 on the way to the 76-55 win.
Stony Brook enjoyed a huge advantage at the free throw line, sinking 23 out of 31 attempts, while the Gaels were just 8-of-17. The Seawolves hit 41.4% of their field goal attempts and 45.5% from beyond the arc. Iona hit 38.6% overall.
The Maroon & Gold were forced into 21 turnovers. The Gaels did manage to win the rebounding battle, holding a 38-35 edge.
Iona returns to action on Nov. 30 at St. Francis (NY) at 7:00 pm.
