New Rochelle, NY - Iona women's basketball has now won four straight after winning the second of a four-game homestand. The Gaels (10-6, 5-0 MAAC) defeated the Peahens (6-8, 2-3 MAAC) by a score of 65-47. The squad will try to make it five in a row when Fairfield comes to town on Jan. 19.
Martina Weber and Tiara Headen led the team in scoring with 13 points apiece. Weber also turned in six rebounds, two assists, and a steal, while Headen added four boards and one steal. Toni Horvath contributed 11 points, one rebound, and five assists.
Elyse Siciliano paced Saint Peter's with 16 points, seven rebounds, and one assist.
The Gaels never trailed in the contest, jumping out with an early 4-0 lead on shots by Weber and Headen. Siciliano landed a jumper to even the score with 17:01 on the clock. Iona went on a 9-3 run to pull ahead by six, but Saint Peter's fought back to bring the score within one. Lauren DeFalco answered with a three-point bucket to ignite a 12-7 Iona breakaway, bringing the tally to 27-19 with 1:02 left to play in the first half.
Joanne Smith picked up a steal on a turnover by Petagay Douse, driving it to the net and giving the Maroon & Gold a 12 point halftime advantage.
The Peahens were unable to pick it up in the second half, as Iona never led by less than seven in the period. Anna McLean dropped in four consecutive points to give the Gaels their largest lead of the evening, a 60-41 advance at the 3:28 mark.
Regan Pettijohn added a three point play before the two teams traded points in the game's final minute.
Iona shot 71% from the free throw line and held a 39-29 rebound advantage, as well as a 26-12 edge in points in the paint.
