Lewisburg, PA - Two sunk free throws by
Martina Weber with one second remaining in the game gave Iona a one point advantage which carried the team to victory at Sojka Pavilion. With the Gaels' (7-6) 45-44 win over Bucknell (8-7), they have now won four of their last five games as they prepare to begin the MAAC conference portion of the schedule.
The Bison charged out to an early lead, with a three pointer by Amanda Brown settling the score at 12-4 at the 12:49 mark. Layups from Weber and Regan Pettijohn and another Weber bucket tied things up at 16 with 4:17 to go in the first half.
The Gaels held closely to the opponent, not allowing Bucknell to get another significant lead in the period. A three spot by Brown closed out the half with Iona trailing 24-20.
A jumper from Tiara Headen one minute into the second half followed by a long shot from Toni Horvath gave the Maroon & Gold a one point lead at 25-24. Bucknell went on a 14-5 run over the next seven minutes.
With 3:27 left in the game, the Bison held a 44-39 lead, but would not score again for the remainder. Iona baskets by Pettijohn and Headen brought the squad to within one. Weber was brought to the free throw line with one second to go on a foul by Hope Foster. She connected on both shots to secure the victory as the clock ran dry.
Weber's double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) led the Gaels. Iona held a dazzling 47-28 rebound advantage over Bucknell.
The MAAC conference slate will heat up as the Gaels take on Manhattan Saturday at 2:00 pm.
