With Iona leading 37-36 at the 13:04 mark, the Greyhounds' (7-6, 3-1 MAAC) Marquis Sullivan scored seven of his 13 points over the next 10 seconds to spark his team's game changing run. Sullivan converted four straight free throws on a double technical foul and then buried the Maroon & Gold with his lone three pointer of the day to put the home team ahead by six points.
The Gaels trailed by as many as 18 points with 2:44 remaining before a valiant comeback effort fell short as the clock ran out.
Bruin recorded his third double-double of the season, setting a career-best with 20 points and matching another with 11 rebounds. Classmate Justin Marshall also set a career-high with 18 points and showed a solid inside-outside presence for the Gaels shooting 7-for-15 from the field and 2-for-3 from behind the arc. Rodriguez matched his season best from the previous game with 11 points, while also setting a new standard with 11 boards. It was the rookie forward's first collegiate double-double.
Loyola was led by junior Gerald Brown's 20 points. Sullivan and junior Michael Tuck netted 13 points a piece. Tuck had a double-double with a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Gaels continue MAAC play on the road at Marist on Tuesday (Jan. 9) for a 7:30 pm tip-off.
