GAELS STUNNED BY SIENA 2-1

New Rochelle, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team and Sienna were locked in a scoreless tie after one half of play before teams combined for 9 shots and all of the matches 3 goals in the second half.  The Saints (4-7-1, 1-2) picked up the match's first goal as Susie Blaisdell put in a rebound off a Tabitha Tice shot in the 56th minute.  The Gaels (2-13, 0-4) responded in the 71st minute as sophomore Mariel Pepe blasted one past Siena keeper Elizabeth Bama to tie the score at 1.

The first half was scoreless between the Gaels and Saints as the teams each got off to slow starts.  They combined for just 6 shots and 3 shots on goal.  As the teams came out for the second half, Siena quickly came out on the attack and just 11 minutes in notched the first goal of the match.  Tice shot one that was knocked down by Gaels' junior keeper Suzanne Baldissard, but Blaisdell gathered the rebound to give Siena a 1-0 lead.

The Gaels responded with pressure of their own but couldn't find the equalizer.  Pepe came through with her second goal of the season as she found the ball on her foot and put it past Bama to tie the score.  The Gaels, though were stunned late in their second straight match as the Saints netted what proved to be the game winner in the 83rd minute.  Katie Goodwin started the attack and sent a pass to Deonna Gould.  Gould pushed the ball upfield and found Chelsea Maguire who put the ball just out of the reach of Baldissard to make it 2-1 Saints.

The Gaels had a late opportunity as freshman Diane Hare's shot just missed wide and Iona fell to Siena 2-1.  Pepe and freshman Ali Werner each registered two shots while juniors Liz Allan and Julianne Marinaro and Hare each recorded a shot.  The Saints just outshot the Gaels 8 to 7 for the match and 5 to 4 in shots on goal.

The Gaels continue MAAC play as they head to Connecticut to take on Fairfield on Friday, October 19.
