Buffalo, NY - With just two seconds left in the first half, Canisius' Stephanie Karst
got the first and only goal as the Iona College women's soccer team
fell 1-0. The Gaels (2-11, 0-2) and the Griffins (4-6-1, 1-1) were
scoreless throughout the majority of the first half with the team's
each getting their opportunities. The teams combined for 11 shots, but
the 12th shot of the half proved to be the decider.
The Griffins got the ball on a throw-in and the ball found the foot of Kasey Makowski. She fed Karst, who put the ball in the right side past Gaels' keeper Suzanne Baldissard to make it 1-0 at the end of the first half. Iona couldn't get anything started in the second half as they only registered one shot as they fell to 0-2 in MAAC conference play with a 1-0 loss to Canisius.
Sophomore Mariel Pepe had two shots for the Gaels and freshman Diane Hare, junior Liz Allan, and senior Christina Rizzi each tallied a shot and accounted for the Gaels' 3 shots on goal. The Griffins outshot the Gaels 4 to 1 in the second half and 12 to 5 in the game. Canisius also registered 4 more shots on goal. Baldissard made six saves in the match while Canisius' keeper Daniella Pettinari made 3 saves.
The Gaels continue their MAAC schedule at Mazzella Field on Friday, October 12 as they welcome Marist at 3 PM.
