Jersy City, NJ - No Gael managed to score in double figures against the Peahens, as the Iona College women's basketball team (14-9, 9-3 MAAC) dropped a 52-47 decision to Saint Peter's (10-11, 6-6 MAAC). The Peahens held Iona's leading scorer
Martina Weber to just eight points.
The game remained scoreless over the opening five minutes, until Tiara Headen was fouled and hit two from the line. Toni Horvath added a three point field goal to push Iona's lead to 5-0 at 13:58.
The Maroon & Gold maintained the lead for much of the first half. Saint Peter's gained an edge on a layup by Tania Kennedy at the 4:20 mark, and the two teams would trade the advantage over the remainder. Lauren Huber added a bucket for the Gaels to send the squad into the second half with a 24-23 lead.
The Peahens pulled ahead on a good free throw shot by Elina Kalnina. Iona would tie the game four times in the half, but could not solve Saint Peter's.
Headen grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, followed by Weber's six. Lauren DeFalco contributed seven points and five boards, while Jessica Anger added six points and four rebounds in 17 minutes of action.
The Peahens held a slim advantage in field goal percentage, 33.3%-31.0%, and were outrebounded by the Gaels 42-37.
Iona will be back in action on Friday as they travel north to take on Siena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
