Box Score
Bridgeport, CT - Junior Lauren DeFalco scored a team-high 14 points, with Tiara Headen and Martina Weber adding 13 and 10 respectively, as the Iona College women's basketball team (16-10, 11-4 MAAC) cruised past Fairfield 59-47 at the Arena at Harbor Yard. The Stags never led in the game.
Iona scored the contest's first three baskets, capped of by a three point field goal by Toni Horvath, to jump out to a 7-0 lead at the 18:12 mark. The squad extended its advantage to nine over the next seven minutes.
Fairfield steadily battled back, bringing the score to within three on consecutive jumpers by Baendu Lowenthal and Stephanie Geehan. That would be as close as they would get, however, as the Gaels knocked down three straight from beyond the arc to move ahead by 12.
Stephanie Cziria hit one of two from the line for the Stags with two minutes remaining in the half to bring the halftime score to 32-22.
Fairfield chipped away in the second period, but was unable to get a handle on Iona. DeFalco, Horvath, Joanne Smith, and Regan Pettijohn combined for a perfect 10-for-10 from the stripe in the final 4:26 to seal a big victory for the Maroon & Gold.
Iona held a 43-39 rebound advantage while scoring 18 points off turnovers to Fairfield's nine.
The Gaels are back in action on Monday, hosting Loyola at the Hynes Athletics Center. Game time is set for 7:30 pm.
