New Rochelle, NY - On Senior Day today the Iona College women's water polo team took on Wagner in conference play at the Hynes Athletics Center. The Gaels fell to the Seahawks in a heartbreaking fourth quarter decision 11-10.
Sophomore Amanda Brucia (seven goals, two steals, two ejections drawn) made the first strike of the game 30 seconds in finding the back of the net for the Gaels. Wagner retaliated by putting one past goal keeper Meghan Dailey to tie up the game. The first quarter went to the goals who received two more goals from Brucia, one from senior Nicole King ( two goals, one assist, one steal, and one KOD) and sophomore Amanda Cody (one goal, two steals, and one KOD).
With the Gaels leading 5-1 going into the second quarter, Wagner put some pressure on the Gaels finding the back of the net four times. The Maroon and Gold netted to more goals going into the half making the score 7-5.
The third quarter brought a five meter goal netted by Brucia and goal by the Seahawks, making the score 8-6 going into the final quarter.
Wagner came out in a come back fourth quarter effort, netting three straight goals and taking the lead for the first time in the game 9-8. This would be short lived, while Brucia threw one passed the goalie 30 second later, then another with 3:00 left to play to take a 10-9 lead. Not only 30 seconds later did Wagner come back and tie the game, then with 1:50 left in regulation they would take a 11-10, that the team would hold onto for the win.
On the defensive end senior goalie Christine Richards had ten saves and six steals.
The Gaels are back in action again tonight for more conference play against Siena at 5:30 pm at the Hynes Athletics Center.
