New Rochelle, NY - The Iona College softball team took on the Pirates of Seton Hall today at Pinebrook Field in what was supposed to be a double header. The Pirates took the Gaels in game one 13-3, but with the Maroon & Gold leading in the bottom of the third inning in game two, the game was called on a count of rain.
In game one the Pirates jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on doubles by 3B Kealen Waldron and 1B Shannon Pease; and a single by 2B Leah Menichetti. The Pirates extended that lead in the third inning when they tacked on four more runs making the score 7-0.
The Gaels fired back in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring three runs. Sophomore 1B Val Laschen(1-for-3, 1 run) started the inning off with a single to left field. Then to follow her with two more singles was classmate CF Angie Ortiz(2-for-3, 1 run) and senior 3B Lexi Garbowski(1-for-3, 1 run). A throwing error made by the Pirates third baseman reached sophomore LF Laura Hackimer and resulted in Laschen, Ortiz, and Garbowski scoring.
Seton Hall came right back at the Gaels scoring three more runs in the sixth and the seventh inning to make the score 13-3.
Junior RHP took the loss for the Gaels; this brings her record to (6-9).
In game two the Gaels were leading 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning when the umpired decided the rain was just too much and called the game.
