West Point, NY - Sara Goss' penalty kick in the 12th minute proved to be the game winning goal as the Iona College women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Army at Clinton Field.
The Black Knights (2-3-1) held on to the 1-0 lead into the second half. The Gaels (1-6) were unable to convert on a tying goal on two occasions early in the second half. Iona's first opportunity came seven minutes into the half when
Mariel Pepe's attempt into the right side was headed by a defender while the Army keeper was out of position.
Less than four minutes later the Gaels were awarded a penalty kick following an Army infraction in the box at the 56:36 mark. Army goalkeeper Alex Lostetter denied
Diane Hare's attempt with a diving save to her left.
The Black Knights insurance goals in the 63rd and 82nd minutes to round out the scoring.
Junior
Suzanne Baldissard stopped four shots in the first 69+ minutes. Rookie
Krista Thorn had one save in relief.
Hare and Pepe had four shots a piece (two on goal) in the loss.
Iona returns to action this weekend for two games in Texas taking on the Big 12's Baylor on Friday evening and concluding the trip with a game at UTSA on Sunday afternoon.
