Hamden, CT - Sara Lawler had an goal and an assist as Quinnipiac defeated the Iona
College women's soccer team 3-0 Friday afternoon. The Gaels (2-8) had
a tough time getting anything started against the Bobcats (6-1) and
though they were down only by a goal at halftime, Quinnipiac put the
game out of reach as they added two goals in two minutes early in the
second half.
The Bobcats took the lead early into the match as Justine Lombardi pushed a pass to Lauren Peacock at the top of the box and Peacock scored on a low shot past Gaels' keeper Krista Thorn who came out to try and cut off the angle. The Gaels kept themselves in the match as the were able to keep with the Bobcats, who got 8 more shots in the half but only 3 of them reached net.
In the second half, Lawler was the Bobcats attack she picked up an unassisted tally in the 57th minute and assisted on a Johanne Walleck goal 23 seconds later. Lawlor put the ball on the foot of Walleck who redirected the feed into the lower
left corner of the goal to make it 3-0.
The Bobcats outshot the Gaels 12 to 3 with the Gaels unable to get a shot on goal. Sophomore Mariel Pepe and Freshmen Diane Hare and Carol Danis had the shots for the Gaels and freshman goaltender Krista Thorn made 4 saves on the 7 shots she faced.
The Gaels are back in action as they welcome Columbia to Mazzella Field on Sunday at 12 PM.
