BALTIMORE, MD - Junior Sarah Wiener recorded 23 kills, sophomore Allison Nieters had 30 digs and her classmate Colleen Genett posted nine blocks to lead the Iona College volleyball team to a five-set victory over Loyola in MAAC action at Reitz Arena. The Gaels (15-8, 7-4 MAAC) held off the Greyhounds (5-21, 1-9 MAAC) 22-25, 29-27, 26-24, 22-25, 15-11.
Wiener continued her solid play over the last two weeks, hitting .293 with 23 kills and six errors in 58 attempts. She posted seven digs and five blocks. Freshman Molly O'Shea had eight kills and seven digs six blocks. Fellow rookie Rachelle Wilson posted seven kills.
Defensively, Nieters' 30 dig effort was her seventh of the season, one behind Chattanooga's Lara Newberry for the most 30+ dig matches in NCAA Div. I. Newberry recorded her eighth of the season this afternoon vs. Greensboro. Nieters now stands just 12 digs shy of the Iona school record. She currently stands behind Kathy Kunath '03 (1,360), Ann Bonner '97 (1,356) and Emily Mansur '05 (1,349) with 1,348 in under two seasons in Maroon & Gold.
Sophomore Alyssa Erickson posted her second straight double-double with 38 assists and 15 digs. She has a team-leading nine on the season. Sophomore Rachel Whitten posted 11 digs.
The Gaels posted double-digit blocks for the eight time this season, second match in a row and sixth in the last eight with 12 total blocks. The match also marked the return of senior co-captain Kendall Paulus who missed the last 10 matches with a foot injury.
