GAELS HOLD OFF CANISIUS ON THE ROAD, 57-52

Box Score Buffalo, NY - Freshman Rashon Dwight's three pointer from the corner with a minute to play sealed the Iona College men's basketball team's 57-52 win over Canisius at the Koessler Center. Senior Dexter Gray tallied a career-high 21 points in the victory.

The Gaels (11-17, 7-9 MAAC) opened the game with an 8-3 lead through the first four minutes. Rookie Andre Tarver hit two straight jumpers to begin the game and capped the run with two free throws. Canisius (4-22, 2-14 MAAC) then hit six straight threes to go on a 18-7 run. Freshman Greg Logins hit four-in-a-row of his own to put the Golden Griffins ahead 23-15. Iona regained its composure and clamped down the defense catching up with an 11-3 of its own, tying the score at 26-26 with 3:41 to play on two Dexter Gray free throws. The two teams went into halftime tied at 28.

The Gaels took the lead on its first possession of the second half when Kyle Camper drained a three pointer from the wing. The Gaels went up by six on a Gray layup at 15:26. Canisius kept itself close and took its only lead of the second half with less than four minutes remaining on a Logins layup. Gray put Iona ahead for good with a short jumper at 2:19. After another solid defensive stop and steal by junior Gary Springer, Dwight was found open in the corner and buried a key three-pointer to give Iona a 55-50 lead at the one-minute mark. Canisius' sophomore Frank Turner hit two free throws to cut the deficit to three points. The Gaels missed a shot on their next possession with the clock running down allowing the Golden Griffins an opportunity for a game-tying three pointer to force overtime. After a timeout, Jovan Robinson caught the baseline inbound pass with a foot on the sideline and was called for a turnover to seal the game for Iona.

Gray's 21 points were aided by a 9-for-10 performance from the free throw line. He added six rebounds in 29 minutes of play. Camper had 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals in an all-around effort. Springer led the Gaels with 10 boards.

Iona withstood a poor shooting effort (35.8) a tough defensive effort while taking care of the ball and only committing 11 turnovers. The Gaels out rebounded Canisius, 39-35.

Logins' had 14 of his team-high 18 points in the first half. Turner had 15 points with seven rebounds and seven assists in the loss. Rookie Tomas Vasquez-Simmons led the home team with eight boards.

The Gaels return home to face Hofstra in the ESPNU Bracketbusters match up on Saturday (Feb. 23) for a 2:00 pm tipoff
