Villanova, PA - The Iona College women's water polo team swept through another
tournament by winning three straight at the Villanova Invitational on
Saturday and Sunday. The Gaels sunk Mercyhurst 20-13 and took care of
Slippery Rock 13-7 and the host Wildcats 18-10.
Amanda Brucia led the Gael (13-9) against the Lakers (8-4) with five goals and two assists in the 20-13 win. Lauren Peterson added five goals and three assists and rookie Maggie Wood netted four goals, handed out an assist and grabbed three steals. Amanda Cody scored three goals and three Gaels each had a goal apiece, Alicia Keating, Meghan Keller and Sam Cody. Kathleen Link stopped 13 shots and grabbed three steals.
The Maroon & Gold faced Slippery Rock (3-10) in the afternoon and for the second time this season. The result was the same with Iona grabbing a 13-7 win. Wood netted three more goals and Peterson added four goals and handed out three assists. Keller was outstanding scoring four goals on four shots, handed out an assist, grabbed two steals and drew a kickout. Brucia had two assists, three kickouts drawn and three steals, Sam Cody had four steals and Link had 12 saves and two steals.
On Sunday, Iona faced the host Villanova (3-14) and picked up its fifth straight win 18-10. The Gaels have won eight straight and ten games this season against Division I teams. The Gaels have won ten games for the tenth straight season. Peterson led the team with five goals, including a 5-meter, five assists, a steal, a kickout drawn and field block. Brucia had four goals, three assists, a steal and a kickout drawn. Wood added three goals, a steal, and two kickouts drawn. Amanda Cody had three goals, three steals and Keller, Megan Byrnes, Keating, and Keller each had a goal. Link stopped four shots in the win.
The Gaels are back in the pool on Wednesday, April 2 at Conn College.
