GAELS FALL TO GRIFFS IN MAAC OPENING ROUND, 64-59

Box Score

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -Frank Turner scored 12 points and added six assists and four steals to lead 10th-seeded Canisius to a 64-59 upset over seventh-seeded Iona in the opening round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament Friday night.

The Golden Griffins (6-24) advance to face second-seeded Rider in Saturday's quarterfinal round.

Bob Bevilacqua and Rishawn Johnson added 14 points apiece in the win.

The Gaels, who got 14 points from Milan Prodanovic and 12 from Gray Dexter, finished the year 12-20. Kyle Camper added 10 points.

Trailing since the 15-minute mark of the first half, Canisius finally retook the lead 49-48 on a traditional 3-point play off a steal by Turner with 8:06 left in the game.

Iona was back up 56-54 with 2:30 remaining, but Canisius got back-to-back field goals from Greg Logins and another from Turner after an Iona foul shot.

That made it 60-57 Canisius with 1:25 to go, and they didn't look back.

Iona's De'Shaune Griffin hit the front of the rim with what would have been the game-tying 3-pointer with less than 10 seconds to go. Logins grabbed the rebound and hit both his free throws at the other end to clinch the win.
