Brooklyn, NY - The Iona College women's water polo team began the last weekend of the
regular season with a pair of games in Brooklyn. Iona battled back to send the game
to overtime against St. Francis (NY) (10-11, 3-4 MAAC) and scored twice
for a 9-7 win in Brooklyn. The Gaels (20-11, 6-2 MAAC) dominated
Wagner 14-9 to set a new single-season record with 20 wins in afternoon
game.
Against the Terriers, the Gaels were trailing 2-1 after the first quarter, 5-3 at the half, and 6-4 with one quarter remaining. The Maroon and Gold outscored St. Francis (NY) three to one and sent the game to overtime. Amanda Brucia scored on a 5M and Maggie Wood netting one with no time left for two goals in less than 30 seconds. It took two overtimes to decide the game and Iona scored twice with Brucia adding another 5M and Meghan Keller scoring to give the Gaels a 9-7 win. Brucia finished with five goals, five kickouts drawn, and two steals. Wood added two goals, four kickouts drawn and Keller handed out an assist to her goal. Amanda Cody had a goal, an assist, four kickouts drawn, co-captains Lauren Peterson had a goal, two assists, a kickout and Alicia Keating had three kickouts drawn and a steal in the win.
In the second game, Iona used a 5-2 first quarter lead and a 7-2 halftime lead on its way to a 14-9 defeat of Wagner. Peterson moved within eleven goals of Brucia's single season record with five goals and added two assists and four kickouts drawn. Brucia had a hat trick and an assist and Wood added four goals, three steals, and a kickout drawn. Keating, Keller and Amanda Anastasio each had a goal with Anastasio adding a steal. GK Kathleen Link had 18 saves.
The Gaels clinched the No. 2 seed in the MAAC Water Polo Championships next weekend. The Gaels close out the regular season tomorrow, April 20, against Marist and Villanova in Staten Island, NY.
