NEW LONDON, CT- The Iona College women?s water polo team extended its winning streak to
nine games, a new team record, topping Connecticut College 21-12 on
Wednesday night. Two-time MAAC Defensive Player of the Week, Goalie
Kathleen Link, stopped 17 shots. Two-time Rookie
of the Week Maggie Wood and Amanda Cody with five goals apiece.
The Gaels (14-9) scored early and often against the Camels (2-4) with Iona holding a four goal advantage after the first quarter and five goal lead at halftime. The lead grew to nine goals with the Maroon & Gold up 18-9 at the end of the third quarter and extended to 11 when the final horn sounded.
Wood added an assist to her five goal performance. Meghan Keller netted four goals, Amanda Brucia had a pair of goals, rookie Amanda Anastasio finished with a hat trick and Kerby Lewis and Co-Captain Alicia Keating rounded out the scoring with a goal each. Co-Captain Lauren Peterson handed out four assists and Sam Cody had three takeaways in the victory.
The win set a new team record for consecutive wins. The previous mark was eight consecutive set by the 2004 MAAC Championship. The Gaels look to extend the streak at the MAAC Games this weekend, April 5-6. Iona will face Villanova, Marist, Wagner and Siena. The two games originally scheduled to be played at Iona (Wagner and Siena) have been moved to Marist due to facility issues.
