Poughkeepsie, NY - The Iona College water polo team returns the MAAC Championship game looking for its second title after a 14-10 win in the first semifinal of the 2008 MAAC Women's Water Polo Championship, held at Marist College's McCann Natatorium. Co-Captain Lauren Peterson had four goals.
The Gaels jumped out to a 3-2 lead after the first quarter and were in control with a 8-5 halftime advantage. The teams each netted three goals in the third, but Iona outscored the No. 3 seed Seahawks three to two in the final quarter for 14-10 win.
Peterson added two assists and two kickouts to her four goals. Amanda Brucia had hat trick with three steals, a kickout drawn and two assists. Rookie of the Week Maggie Wood also added three goals, an assist and three steals. Meghan Keller netted a pair of goals, had a steal and drew two kickouts. Amanda Cody scored a goal, had a steal and drew a kickout and co-captain Alicia Keating rounded out the scoring with a goal, two steals and a kickout drawn. Rookie GK Kathleen Link had 13 saves and three steals. Head Coach Brian Kelly called her "the star of the game."
The Gaels return to the championship game where they will face No. 1 Marist, who defeated No. 4 Siena 11-9 in double overtime. The game will be held at 2:00 pm with the consolation game between Siena and Wagner at 12:00 pm. The championship winner will earn the league's automatic bid to the 2008 NCAA Division I Women's Water Polo Championship. The NCAA bracket will announced on Monday, April 29 at 7:00 p.m., live on CBS College Sports Television Tonight.
