Poughkeepsie, NY - The Iona College women's water polo team was edged 7-6 by Marist in the
2008 MAAC Women's Water Polo Championship. The No. 2 Gaels outscored
the No. 1 Red Foxes three goals to one in the final quarter, but it
wasn't enough. MAAC Offensive Player of the Year Lauren Peterson had
three goals.
The Red Foxes led 2-1 after the first and 5-3 at halftime. Iona trailed by three goals in the third and came up just a goal short of tying the game and sending it to overtime. Peterson added an assist and two kickouts drawn to her three goals. Amanda Brucia had a pair of goals, two steals and three kickouts drawn while co-captain Alicia Keating rounded out the Gaels' scoring with a goal, a steal and a kickout drawn. Co-Defensive Player of the Year GK Kathleen Link stopped 11 shots and had four steals in the loss.
Iona finished with a regular season record of 22-12 and 7-3 in the MAAC. The 22 wins are a program best.
