Poughkeepsie, NY - The Iona College women's water polo team extended its team-record
winning streak to ten and took its first MAAC win with a domiant 15-10 victory over Villanova. The
Gaels (15-10) defeated the Wildcats (3-15) to break the record on just
five days earlier. Iona looked to keep the streak alive against
Marist, but were edged 13-11. Offensive Player of the Week Lauren Peterson led the Gaels with 13
goals in the two games.
In the opening game against Villanova, Iona jumped out to a commanding 5-1 advantage after the first quarter. Each team added a pair of goals before halftime with the Gaels still holding the lead. The Maroon & Gold outscored the Wildcats 8-7 over the final two quarters and held on for a 15-10 win to extend the streak to ten games. Peterson had six goals followed by Amanda Brucia's hat trick. Rookie of the Week Maggie Wood had a pair of goals and fellow rookie Amanda Anastasio also tallied a pair with co-Captain Alicia Keating and Amanda Cody each netting a goal in the win.
Looking to extend the streak, the Gaels took on the Red Foxes (17-6) in a very close game throughout. Iona trailed 4-2 after the first quarter and were down 6-3 at halftime. Marist used a four goal third quarter to extend its lead to 10-5, yet the Gaels kept chipping away. The Maroon & Gold outscored the Red Foxes 6-3 in the fourth quarter, but it was too late as Marist held on for a 13-10 win, snapping the winning streak at 10 games. Peterson again led the Gaels with seven goals and Brucia and Cody each netted a pair in the loss.
The Gaels return to the pool in Poughkeepsie to conclude the MAAC weekend on Sunday, April 6. Iona will face Wagner and Siena in games that we originally scheduled to played at Iona, but due to facility issues were moved to Marist.
