WATER POLO FALLS TO BUCKNELL

GAELS START NEW STREAK; SPLIT WITH WAGNER, SIENA

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Iona College women's water polo team looked to start a new streak after its record-setting 10 game winning streak was snapped last night by Marist. The Gaels (16-11, 2-2 MAAC) were edged in the opener on Sunday by Wagner, 12-11, but quickly rebounded and downed Siena 15-9 to draw the split.

The Seahawks (12-12, 2-2 MAAC) held a 3-2 lead after the first quarter and extended it to a three goal advantage at halftime, 8-5. The Gaels roared back outscoring Wagner 3-1 in the third quarter to make it a one goal game, 9-8. The teams each added three goals in the final quarter and Wagner held on for a 12-11 win. Lauren Peterson netted three goals to raise her weekend total to 16 goals. She also had three assists and one kickout dran. Amanda Brucia had two goals and three kickouts drawn and rookies Amanda Anastasio and Maggie Wood each had a pair of goals. Alicia Keating and Meghan Keller each added a goal to close out the scoring before fouling out. The Gaels battled with foul trouble all game and had 15 personal fouls. Kathleen Link had 12 saves and three steals in the loss.

The Gaels were able draw a split on the day with a commanding win over Siena. The teams were tied at 2 after the first quarter and Iona took a 6-4 lead into halftime. Out of the locker room, the Gaels went on a 6-1 run in the third quarter to take a 12-5 advantage over the Saints (7-15, 1-3 MAAC) and the Maroon & Gold cruised to a 15-9 win. Peterson had six goals and finished the weekend with 22 goals. Brucia netted a hat trick, an assist and five kickouts drawn. Amanda Cody also added three goals, three kickouts drawn including a 5M penalty shot. Keating had a pair of goals, an assist, and four steals with Wood adding a goal to complete the scoring. Link stopped six shots and grabbed five steals.

Iona returns to the pool in Philadelphia next weekend, April 12, with games against St. Francis (NY) and Siena in MAAC play.
