NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's swimming and diving team won its MAAC home opener on Saturday, defeating Canisius by the score of 139-93.
The Gaels started the meer by taking the top two spots in the 400 yard medley relay. The Iona "A" team of
Brittany Freeman,
Jamie Manser,
Sam Cody and
Theresa Harvey took first with a time of 4:10.52. The Iona "B" squad of
Kelsie Johnson,
Sarah Walker,
Christine Williams and
Megan McNeely were just behind with a time of 4:16.28.
Victoria Ponzo kept the Gaels hot by winning the 1000 yd freestyle in a time of 10:53.20.
Christine Larkin's 11:05.94 placed her third while
Kellie Mark was fifth with a time of 11:42.55.
Mackenzie Mone won the 200 yd freestyle for the Maroonn & Gold when she touched the wall in 1:58.26.
Kara Nowakowski was second with a time of 2:01.72,
Caitlin McGregor's 2:04.64 placed her fourth.
Theresa Harvey continued her fantastic start to the season by winning the 50 yd freestyle in a time of 24.93.
Kelsie Johnson was third with a time fo 27.07. Mark took sixth with a 27.26.
Cody, Walker and Williams took second, third and fourth respectively, in the next event, the 200 yd IM. Cody clocked in with a 2:19.55, while Walker turned in a time of 2:23.00 and Williams was just behind with a 2:23.95.
Cody outdid her 200 IM performance with a first place finish in the 200 yd butterfly with a time of 2:12.96. Ponzo was next with a 2:16.07, while Williams' 2:30.89 pkaced her fourth.
Harvey took the 100 yd freestyle with Mone just behind her. Harvey clocked in at 54.04, while Mone finished with a time of 55.19. McGregor was fourth with a time of 58.81.
Freeman's 2:15.70 led a top three sweep in the 200 yd backstroke for the Gaels. Johnson clocked in at 2:19.18, while McNeely's 2:21.40 was third.
The Gaels claimed another sweep in the 500 yd freestyle after Ponzo's 5:20.68 was first, Nowakowski's 5:21.54 was second and Larkin's 5:34.14 took third.
In diving action, freshman
Briana Gongloff won the one-meter and took second in the three-meter for Iona. Gongloff finished the one-meter with 217.72 points and narrowly lost by less than four points after posting a score of 201.45.
The Gaels host St. Francis at the Hynes Center Pool Dec. 2 at 5:00 pm.
