Box Score HACKENSACK, NJ - Five players scored double digit point totals for the second time this season as the Iona College men's basketball team cruised to an 82-60 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in non-conference action at Stratis Arena. The Gaels (8-4) extended their winning streak to a season-long four contests, the first such streak since February 2006.
Senior Milan Prodanovic erupted for a season-high 15 points scoring all five of his buckets from behind the three-point line. The five trifectas matched a career-high for the senior and was a season-high for Iona as team. Sophomore guard Scott Machado scored 12 points and dished out five assists. He shot 4-of-6 from the field and the line. All his points came in the first half as the Gaels began to build their insurmountable lead. Sophomore Jermel Jenkins and freshman Rashard McGill netted 11 points a piece. Jenkins drained three three-pointers and also added five assists. McGill's point total was a season-best and his first collegiate double-digit point effort. Junior Alejo Rodriguez posted his second double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in the victory.
After the Knights knotted the score at 10-10 at the 15:47 mark of the first half, the Gaels scored seven straight points and finished a 19-3 run over the next seven minutes on sophomore Kyle Smyth's jumper in the paint. Iona took a 44-29 lead into the halftime.
Fairleigh Dickinson cut its deficit to under 10 points for the final time in the game at 16:31 in the second half. After Rodriguez converted a layup in traffic on the next possession, both teams went nearly four minutes with out a point. The Gaels poured it on after the drought, however. A McGill free throw at 12:20 began a 12-2 Iona run as Iona led 61-41 with just under nine minutes to play. Six of Iona's last eight field goals in the game came from behind the arc.
In total, Iona drained 12 three-pointers for the third time this season and eighth time since the inception of the three point line. The school record is 13 set last January at Rider. The Maroon & Gold shot 49.2% from the field and 46.2% from beyond the arc. They held FDU to just 34.5% from the field. For just the second time this season, Iona out rebounded its opponent, besting the Knights 39-36.
With an 8-2 non-conference record this season, the team holds its fourth-highest winning percentage in those contests since joining the MAAC in 1981-82. The eight wins is also the most since a nine-win effort in against non-MAAC foes in 1997-98.
The Gaels continue a six-game road trip on Sunday (Dec. 27) when they travel to Hartford, CT to take on No. 11 Connecticut at the XL Center in their toughest challenge to date. Tip off is scheduled for 2:00 pm and can be viewed nationally on ESPNU.
