Starkville, MS - The Iona College Softball team fell on day two at the Bulldog Round
Robin to Kennesaw State and the host, Mississippi State. In the
opener, the Gaels (0-3) on the board with a solo shot from tri-captain
Erin Kyle, but it wasn't enough as the Owls (2-0) took a 7-2 win. In
game two, the Bulldogs grabbed an early 2-0 lead and never looked back
handing Iona a 10-0 defeat.
The Owls got on the scoreboard first plating two runs on two hits in the first inning, but the Gaels were able to leave three stranded on the bases. After the first batter was retired for the Maroon & Gold, Kyle got a pitch she could hit and put it over the left centerfield wall to bring Iona within a run at 2-1 after a full inning. Kennesaw State came back with three more runs in the second inning, but the Gaels added another run of their own.
Tri-captain Courtney Christie drew a lead-off walk and was sacrificed over by rookie Chelsea Sheehan. Christie came around to score two batters later as Rachelle Harris reached on a throwing error and it was 5-2 Owls. Kennesaw State added two runs late in the game and held on for a 7-2 win. Kayla O'Neill went 1-for-2 with a single and a walk. Meghan Hudson got the start for the Gaels and allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits and two walks in the loss. Deanna Algeo came on in relief with five runs, four earned on seven hits, three walks and a strikeout.
Mississippi State didn't allow the Gaels to catch their breath in the afternoon contest as the Bulldogs scored early and often. In her second appearance of the day and first start in the Maroon & Gold, Algeo coudn't match up with MSU, who put seven runs, all earned, on ten hits in 2.1 innings against the rookie. Algeo did pick up her first collegiate strikeout in the loss. The Bulldogs scored all ten runs over the first three innings and got dominant pitching from their starter, Lindsey Dunlap, who allowed just three hits and struck out four in her five innings of work. Kyle, O'Neill and Jaclyn Quinn each finished the game 1-for-2 .
Iona was originally scheduled to play Mississippi State for third place. Due to travel concerns not allowing the
games to not be played as originally scheduled, the Gaels will now face Kennesaw State in a rematch of Saturday's opening contest. ULM was declared the winner based upon pool play results.
