Ann Arbor, MI - The Iona College Women's Water Polo team came off a weekend split and a
sweep of the MAAC Weekly Awards and headed to the Wolverine
Invitational. The Gaels (5-4) saw the host, No. 14 Michigan, put up
four goals in each of the first three quarters to take a 15-8 victory.
Iona came back with an 8-4 win over Mercyhurst.
Iona and the Wolverines (18-8) played a physical game as the teams combined for 22 ejections. Michigan got out to a 4-2 lead after the first quarter and the teams put the same numbers in the second quarter giving the Wolverines a 8-4 halftime advantage. The Blue and Gold added four more in the third quarter to the Gaels' one tally and three more in the final quarter en route to the win.
For Iona, Kathleen Link, this week's MAAC Defensive Player of the Week, stopped 13 shots and added three more steals to her season totals. Leading the way in the scoring column were Maggie Wood and rookie Mackenzie Mone. Wood netted a hat trick with two steals, and two kickouts drawn. Mone also had a hat trick with two steals and added a field block. Lauren Peterson, the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, found the back of the twine for a goal and handed out two assists. Meghan Keller added an assist and Amanda Brucia closed out the Gaels' scoring with a goal, a kickout drawn and a steal.
The Gaels continued the Wolverine Invite later in the day against the Lakers (1-14) and came out quickly netting a 3-0 shutout after the first quarter. Both teams added two goals in the second quarter and Mercyhurst got their own shutout quarter with a 1-0 third quarter to pull with a pair. Iona left no doubt taking the final quarter 3-1 and the win, 8-4.
Wood picked up her second straight hat trick and added four steals. Mone also had another strong game with a pair of goals, two assists, a kickout drawn and five steals. MAAC Rookie of the Week Cecilia Leonard netted two goals and handed out an assist. Brucia added the Gaels' final tally and had a steal. Amanda Cody had three steals and an assist. Link had eight saves and three steals in the win.
Iona's trip in Ann Arbor continues tomorrow morning at 8:00 am as they take on Villanova. The Gaels will also face Gannon at 2:15 pm to wrap up the weekend.
