GAELS DOUBLE-UP IN ANN ARBOR

Ann Arbor, MI - The Iona College Women's Water Polo team continued its weekend at the Wolverine Invitational with games against Villanova and Gannon on Sunday.  The Gaels trailed at halftime and responded by outscoring the Wildcats 9-2 over the final two quarters for a 15-9 win.  The Golden Knights and Iona played a close one, but a strong third quarter gave the Gaels a 13-9 win.

The Maroon & Gold had a 4-3 advantage after the first quarter, but Villanova (0-10) came back with a four goal performance in the second quarter and took a 7-6 lead into halftime.  The Gaels (7-4) shutout the Wildcats in the third quarter 4-0 and added five more goals in the final quarter for the six goal victory. 

Amanda Brucia led the team with five goals and added two steals and a pair of kickouts drawn.  Stephanie Klocke netted a goal with four assits and a steal.  Cecilia Leonard continued her weekend with a hat trick, an assist and a team-leading four steals.  Amanda Cody added a pair of goals and two kickouts drawn.  Lauren Peterson netted two goals, handed out four assist, and drew three kickouts.  Mackenzie Mone had a goal and two steals and Angeli Alonzo scored her first collegiate goal as the Gaels' final tally.  Caitlin McGregor had an assist with Sam Cody adding two steals.  Cara George played the first half in net for Iona and had four saves and handed out an assist.  Kathleen Link played the second half and finished with three saves and a steal.

Iona's trip in Ann Arbor wraped up against Gannon (4-5) and the Gaels again came out with a four goal first quarter and a 4-2 lead.  The Golden Knights, like Villanova, used a four goal second quarter to draw closer, but Iona still held a 7-6 lead.  The Maroon & Gold almost copied their morning production with a 3-0 shutout in the third quarter and each team added three in the fourth quarter and the Gaels finished on top, 13-9.

Leonard led the team with five goals, her highest single game total of the season and the team's second highest, two steals and a field block.  Mone netted a hat trick with a pair of assist and a field block.  Peterson also had two goals, two steals a kickout drawn and a field block.  Brucia found the back of the net twice adding a kickout drawn and two field blocks.  Keller added a goal, an assist and a steal and Maggie Wood handed out an assist and had two takeaways.  Link played the whole game and finished with nine saves and a pair of steals.

Iona finished the weekend 3-1.  The Gaels head west for seven games in five games including playing in the Lancer Invite # 2 beginning on Thursday, March 19.
