GAELS OPEN INVITE WITH TWO WINS

Riverside, CA - The Iona College Women's Water Polo team opened the Lancer Invite # 2, hosted by Cal Baptist, with two big victories.  The Gaels stretched their winning streak to seven games with a 15-8 win over Fresno Pacific in the morning.  The Maroon & Gold followed it up with a 11-5 victory over Chapman.

The Gaels and Sunbirds (5-17) were tied a 2 after the first quarter.  The Maroon & Gold netted four in the second quarter to Fresno Pacific's three to take a 6-5 halftime advantage.  A 5-1 third quarter followed by a 4-2 fourth for the Gaels put the game in the win column. 

Wood netted five goals and added two assists and a field block.  Amanda Brucia also had five goals with two assists and had three kickouts drawn.  Mackenzie Mone had a goal and steal.  Cecilia Leonard netted a goal with an assist, a kickout drawn and steal.  Lauren Peterson added a goal, two assists and a two steals.  Molly Regan added the Gaels' final tally.  Amanda Anastasio had an assist, a kickout drawn and field block.  Amanda Cody handed out an assist, grabbed a steal and had a kickout drawn.  Sam Cody had a pair of assist.  Kathleen Link had 10 saves in three and half quarters played.  Cara George added 2 saves in her half quarter in net.

Against the Panthers (6-11), Iona scored three goals in each of the first two quarters and held Chapman to just two goals to hold a 6-2 halftime advantage.  Another strong third quarter put the game out of reach as the Gaels shutout Chapman 4-0 and despite a 3-1 final quarter by the Panthers, Iona grabbed the 11-5 win. 

Wood led the way with five goals.  Mone scored a hat trick as the other leading goal scorer.  Meghan Keller had a goal, an assist and three steals and Amanda Cody added the final tally.  Leonard had a pair of assists, a kickout drawn and field block.  Peterson handed out an assist and Sam Cody had three takeaways.  Link played the first half and stopped seven shots.  George closed the game with six saves in the second half.

The weekend at the Lancer Invite # 2 continues tomorrow with two more games.  Iona faces Azuza Pacific at 1:00 pm and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7:00 pm.  All times are Eastern Standard Time (EST).
