Riverside, CA - The Iona College Women's Water Polo team finished its weekend at the
Lancer Invite # 2 with two more victories to extend the season winning
streak to nine. The Gaels netted seven in the first quarter en route
to a 13-7 win over Azuza Pacific. A six goal second quarter against
CMS sent Iona to a 11-5 win.
With a seven goal output in the first quarter matched by a four goal quarter by the Cougars (0-9), the Gaels came back with a 2-1 second quarter to take a 9-5 lead into the locker room. Iona shutout Azuza Pacific 4-0 in the third quarter. The Cougars had a shutout of their own in the fourth quarter, 2-0, but Iona took home the 13-7 win.
Lauren Peterson led the team with four goals and added a steal. Maggie Wood and Amanda Brucia each netted 2 goals with 2 steals. Brucia also had an assist. Caitlin McGregor scored a goal and Cecilia Leonard found the back of the net twice with four steals, a kickout drawn and field block. Meghan Keller netted a goal with a pair of steals and Sam Cody had a goal with four steals. Kathleen Link played the first half with four saves. Cara George played the second half and stopped six shots.
In the second game against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (5-9), Iona trailed 2-1 after the first quarter, but responded with a 6-2 second quarter to grab a 7-3 halftime lead. Each team added a goal in the third quarter and 3-0 fourth quarter shutout sealed the victory and a 4-0 record at the Lancer Invite # 2.
Peterson topped her previous game performance with six goals, three kickouts drawn and a steal. Keller added a pair of goals, handed out an assist and had four steals. Leonard scored a goal with two steals and a pair of kickouts drawn. Mackenzie Mone scored two with an assist, two steals and two kickouts drawn. Wood handed out two assists with two takeaways and a kickout drawn. Brucia also had two takeaways. Link played the full game with 11 saves and two steals.
Iona is on a season-best nine game winning streak. The school mark of 10 straight wins was set in 2008. Iona closes out the west coast trip on Monday, March 23 at 3:00 pm EST against No. 13 UC Santa Barbara.
