Princeton, NJ - The Iona College Women's Water Polo team did something Friday night
they have never done in the program's history. On Friday, the Gaels
went into Princeton and stunned the home team, 6-5, for the program's
first-ever victory over the Tigers. Amanda Anastasio scored the
game-winner with 20 seconds left.
After the Tigers (12-8) had a 3-0 shutout in the first quarter, the Gaels (14-5) responded with their own 3-0 quarter and it was tied at 6 heading into the locker room. Princeton used a 2-1 third quarter to push ahead. With the game tied at 5 in the fourth quarter, Anastasio found the back of the net to give the Gaels the advantage, one they would not relinquish, as Iona claimed the win, 6-5.
Mackenzie Mone and Cecilia Leonard led the Gaels offensively. Mone had a pair of goals, a steal and kickout drawn. Leonard netted a pair with three steals, a kickout drawn and two field blocks. Maggie Wood had a goal, an assist, five steals, four kickouts drawn and three field blocks, all team-highs. Anastasio added a steal to her game-winning tally. Amanda Brucia handed out two assists and had two takeaways. Lauren Peterson added an assist and Sam Cody had three steals. Kathleen Link played the whole game with 10 saves and 2 steals.
Iona returns to the pool on Saturday for a pair of games at the Villanova Invitational in Philadelphia. The Gaels face George Washington at 9:30 am and the host Wildcats at 11 am.
