Villanova, PA - The Iona College Women's Water Polo continued its non-conference
schedule at the Villanova Invitational on Saturday. The Gaels used a
six goal fourth quarter to seal the 11-7 victory and the team's second
victory in a row.
Iona had a 3-2 advantage after the first quarter and the Gaels and Colonials (5-16) each added a tally in the second quarter to give the Maroon & Gold a 4-3 halftime lead. George Washington outscored Iona 2-1 in the third to tie the game at 5, but a 6-2 explosion in the final quarter put Iona out in front for good and gave them the win.
Lauren Peterson set the pace as she scored four goals. Cecilia Leonard had a pair of goals, two assists and three steals. Meghan Keller scored a goal with an assist and four steals. Mackenzie Mone scored a pair and had a pair of takeaways. Maggie Wood found the back of the net and added an assist and three steals. Amanda Brucia scored the final tally with two steals and a kickout drawn. Kathleen Link played the full 32 minutes and had 10 saves.
The Gaels get back in the pool next Saturday, April 4, and open MAAC Conference play. Iona will face Marist at 11:30 am and then take on Villanova in a non-conference game at 2:30 pm. Both games will be played at Wagner College.
