Poughkeepsie, NY - The Iona College Women's Water Polo team wrapped up the Marist
Invitational with a pair of games on Sunday. The Gaels (4-3) fell in
the opener 13-7 to Brown, but came back with a dominant 15-8 victory
over Siena led by Lauren Peterson's five goals.
Iona struggles came on the power play against the Bears (8-4) as they finished the game just 1-for-8 on the morning. Trailing 7-3 after the first half, the Maroon & Gold netted a pair in the third quarter, but were still down 10-5. Brown added three more in the final quarter to Iona's two goals to take the win. Mackenzie Mone had two goals and Lauren Peterson added a pair with two kickouts drawn. Cecilia Leonard netted a goal, had two steals, and two kickouts drawn. Meghan Keller notched a single tally and Sam Cody added Iona's final goal. Amanda Brucia had two takeaways and two kickouts drawn. Kathleen Link finished with six saves in the loss.
The Gaels again found themselves down as the Saints (3-7) held a 4-3 advantage after the first quarter. Iona shutout Siena 3-0 in the second quarter to take a 6-4 lead into the locker room. With six goals in the third quarter, the Maroon & Gold opened up the game outscoring the Saints 9-4 over the final two quarters in the win. Peterson continued her strong weekend with five goals followed by Maggie Wood, Brucia and Leonard, who each added hat tricks. Wood had two steals, three kickouts drawn and a field block in addition to her goals. Brucia added three kickouts drawn, a pair of steals and field block to her three tallies and Leonard added four steals and a pair of assists to her three goals. Mone had a goal and three steals and Amanda Anstasio drew three kickouts. Link had 11 stops in goal.
Iona travels to Ann Arbor for the Michigan Invitational beginning Saturday, March 14 against the No. 14 Wolverines.
