SEAHAWKS FLY OVER GAELS

Staten Island, NY - The Iona College Softball team headed to Staten Island to make up a single game against Wagner that was originally scheduled for April 15.  The Seahawks scored twice in the first and used a nine run second on the way to an 11-0 win in five innings.

The Seahawks (19-26) got their first run after a lead-off double by Emily Pierce. Pierce stole second and was pushed as Kate Eshelman picked up the RBI on an error to the secondbaseman. Esheleman stole second and two batters later was brought home on a RBI single off the bat of Amanda Garcia and it was 2-0 Wagner.  Kaelynn Armenta got the start in the circle for Wagner and had to deal with some trouble early with Iona (11-21) in the second. Allyssa James reached on an error by the shortstop and was pushed over on a successful sacrifice bunt laid down by Courtney Christie. James moved to third on a passed ball, but Armenta picked up one of her four Ks on the day to end the threat and the inning.

Wagner broke the game open in the home half of the second with a two-out rally.  After retiring the first two batters with a ground out and a strike out, Gaels' starter Kassondra Silva gave up a walk and two singles to load the bases.  Andrea Lazzari drew a seven pitch walk and picked up the RBI as Wagner went up 3-0.  Another walk plated another run and Garcia picked up another RBI with a single to shortstop and it was 5-0 Seahawks.  Wagner picked up another run off a walk followed by a two-RBI infield single Hailey Corthell, which drove Silva out of the game.  Despite the pitching change, Wagner got another run off a walk and a two-RBI single to build the lead to 11-0.

Iona's last chance to break the shutout came in the bottom of the fifth.  Deanna Algeo, who came on in relief of Silva, singled up the middle followed two batters later by a Chelsea Sheehan walk to put two on with one out.  Rachelle Harris dropped a single into left field to load the bases.  Arementa got two staight fly ball outs to end the inning and the game as Wagner took the win and shutout in five innings.

Silva lasted 1.2 innings and was charged with 10 runs, nine earned, on six hits and four walks.  She added a strikeout in the loss.  Algeo tossed 2.1 innings in relief with a run, earned, on a hit, two walks and a strikeout.  Armenta pitched a complete game three-hitter aided by her four strikeouts.  She walked four in the win.  Harris went 1-for-2 and Sheehan drew two walks.

Iona returns to MAAC Conference play and Rice Oval on Saturday, April 25 as they face Manhattan in a double-header.  First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
