Poughkeepsie, NY - The No. 1 seed Iona College Women's Water Polo team faced the No. 3
seed Marist in the 2009 MAAC Water Polo Championship on Sunday at the
McCann Natatorium in Poughkeepsie. The Red Foxes jumped out to a 6-3
halftime advantage and never looked back in their 11-7 win.
The Red Foxes (18-13) and Gaels (22-8) faced each other in last year's MAAC Championship where Marist took the title with a 7-6 win. This year's championship game saw Marist build their three goal advantage with a 3-2 first quarter and a 3-1 second quarter. The Red Foxes broke the game open with a 4-1 third quarter and despite the Gaels' winning the fourth quarter 3-1, the Red Foxes finished on top for the win.
Lauren Peterson led the team with three goals followed by Amanda Brucia, Mackenzie Mone, Cecilia Leonard, the MAAC Rookie of the Year, and Amanda Cody each adding a goal.
Brucia and Peterson were selected to the All-Tournament team for their performance over the weekend. The 22 wins for the Gaels tie the program's benchmark set last season. The program also achieved its 200th victory yesterday in the MAAC semifinals.
